Concept for Campus Rededication for Homes at First Presbyterian Church

Striving to serve Oakland’s greatest needs

In the span of a generation, Oakland’s First Church Campus has transitioned from a campus serving a single congregation into a community center serving thousands of Oaklanders. Dozens of local non-profit organizations use the campus for daily operations, as a gathering place for their membership, and as a place to organize, celebrate, and serve. This conceptual redevelopment of the campus is designed to assist the First Church community in determining whether it can continue to accomplish that mission, while also meeting Oakland’s greatest need: providing new affordable housing for Oaklanders.

Campus History

First Church was founded in 1853, and is the oldest religious community in the East Bay. The church has been at its historic Broadway Campus since 1914. The campus was expanded once in 1960. This project modernizes outdated spaces and reorganizes operations to allow for the addition of new, affordable homes.
